Scenario-Based Training

Practical, authentic and sustainable

Purpose: Scenario-based training is particularly suited to training your employees in the application of practical or activity-orientated knowledge. With this your employees learn how to apply the knowledge in a realistic and safe learning situation allowing them to develop competencies.

Knowledge transfer: In a scenario-based training program your employees are presented with realistic and life-like problems from their day to day working life. Various types of scenario can be differentiated:

In dialogue-based scenarios the initial situation and participants are first introduced. Subsequently your employee can work through numerous variations of the scenario by selecting different dialogue to be used in the scenario. In each of the possible routes through the scenario the learner receives corresponding feedback from his conversation partner and at the end a summary of his/her progress from a professional. By applying their knowledge in authentic learning situations, your employees activate their inert knowledge enabling them to put it to use more quickly and effectively in problem situations.

In action-based scenarios your employees select various actions from a menu or can interact with a represented object. Once the action has been carried out the learner is informed of the consequences of that action on the scenario.

A good example of an application of an action-based scenario is complex logistical processes. The participants can control certain actions (e.g. purchasing goods) which have direct consequences on other figures (e.g. room in store). Additional (non-foreseeable) events (e.g. a sales slump) can make the scenario more complex and with that simulate a more realistic but controlled situation in which decisions must be made.

Area of use: Scenario-based training can be used within the framework of an e-learning or blended learning training measure to train your employees in standard behaviors or bring about a change in attitudes.

Provision: Scenario-based training can be used on mobile end devices (tablets) as well as standard devices and can be easily integrated with learning platforms or learning management systems.
